Coxwain’s Basic Manual

Introduction:
The Ennis Sub Aqua Club’s Excalibur RIB comes equipped with a diesel fuelled, counter rotating, twin propped, single shaft inboard engine. There are a number of differences between this type of configuration and previous boats operated by the Ennis Sub Aqua Club. This guide is a quick reference to the main changes and differences likely to be noticed by the club’s coxwains.

The Boat:
The boat itself is longer the previous RIBs used by ESAC, with the control console mounted to the rear as opposed to the Stern Mounted console we are used to.

Checking the Boat
Prior to Launch:
Do a walk around of the boat – check for signs of damage to the hull or pontoons. Now check the Z Drive engine mounting.
Z Drive:
The boat uses an inboard engine, with an external Z-Drive.

The props should be free of damage and the water intake should be clear of obstructions.
Inside the Boat:
Open the engine compartment cover to check inside the engine compartment. CAUTION – never open the cover while the engine is running. The compartment should be free of loose objects. Check that there are no obvious signs of damage, or of fuel or oil leaks.
Check the Storage containers – they should contain Flares, First Aid Kit, Tools. Make sure the lids are firmly sealed.

Check the Oil level is between the minimum and maximum. If the Oil level is running low please inform the Equipment’s Officer.

Check that the coolant level is also correct:

Check the belt for obvious obstructions and damage.

Close the engine compartment cover and check that the Fuel
intake cover is securely in place. Now open the Battery Compartment door to
switch on the battery. 

Testing the
Instrumentation:

Turn the key to position 1.
Now turn on the power switches on the main console:
Check that there is power going to all the modules, and that there is a charge showing on the battery charge gauge.

When you first turn the key to position 1 the warning lights should light up in rotation around the dial twice. You need to let this happen before you turn the key to position 2 to start the engine.

Check that the main body of the boat is free from obstacles that may pose a hazard to passengers.
